Hi Pauline - at least the activity will burn off some of those unwanted calories.

I'm wearing 2 thin jumpers and a thin but warm fleece as well as jeans, tights and my 'winter older persons' fleecy slippers, with a shawl over my knees. I could do with fingerless mittens to type and I'm saving the wooly hat for later - lol It isn't too bad in the living room where the gas fire is, and OH has dragged an oil filled electric rad in from the garage to the hall. We hope it will help to take the chill off the upstairs bedrooms.
I'd really like to borrow a fire for in here, but OH doesn't want to bother the neighbours. Not a happy bunny. Goodness knows how we coped when we were young - probably tended to stay in the main living room. Come to think of it, I can't remember playing in my bedroom in the winter.

Any help you can give to YG would be gratefully received

Oh dear Maz. What a shame about the double glazing. Still they're better than nothing. Any chance they are covered by FENSA (10 yr guarentee) or the house insurance?

Booooooooooo, sorry I disappeared quickly this morning OH wanted to go out so I had to jump to attention and get ready LOL. DET may sit on my throne if she has done well researching but if she wants to stay there she will have to find my missing rellie LOL. 4 other people have tried not including me and can we find him !!!! @@**@@@ not.

YG

YG Report 2 Jan 2011 20:02

Oooh I'm sure DET would come up trumps LG!!!

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 2 Jan 2011 20:03

Well I might just give her a crack at it. I am banging my head on the brick wall LOL.

YG

YG Report 2 Jan 2011 20:08

Bless her, she's spent all afternoon and come up with loads of stuff for me.

I was thinking of joining Ancestry, but the full world membership is £150+ and that is just too much at the moment.

I wish, oh wish, that I had a contact address for my rellies in Oz because they would be able to furnish me with all sorts of info.

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 2 Jan 2011 20:14

It is expensive for Worldwide and seeing as I don't seem to have many rellies abroad I rely on other folk to look the few I have up for me. I do have Ancestry and 1911 though so if I can help as well as DET suggested you would be more than welcome.

I've got plenty to do now on my tree! This all started because of the contact I had on Hot Matches, but it has spurred me into starting again! I want to get this Australian side done and then I can concentrate on the easier ones in the UK. I already have lots of information for them, so will have to go back through the paper files and get everything sorted! My evenings are going to be well taken up!

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 2 Jan 2011 21:14

As will be mine I am trying to put each member of my tree onto a record card and so far I am only at the start of B.

YG

YG Report 2 Jan 2011 21:22

That's a good idea LG for storing all the research information. Are you cross referencing them to their partners, siblings etc and if so, how are you doing it?

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 2 Jan 2011 21:39

Right here we go I hope this makes sense. LOL

At the top of the card I put persons name and D.O.B.and also name of his father and mother using her maiden name. I use a highlighter a different colour for each main part of our family ie. Blue for OH Maternal line, orange for his Paternal line.
the following are on seperate line as listed
birth details inc area
baptism details
marriage including spouse name
death details

on reverse I list down all census details, address, occupations.

It cross references quite well as the parents are always on top of the cards and I can see at a glance which branch of the family they belong to. These are all kept in alphabetical and numerical order(according to D O B) in index boxes.
For example (I hope Derek does not read this LOL) I have For example under M Gilbert Measham 1745 marked with yellow highlighter next in box will be Gilbert Measham 1816 again in yellow. I have a complete list of tree members on ancestry for cross reference too which helps.

YG

YG Report 2 Jan 2011 21:52

Mmm, right!! I think I'm with it!!

I could use an index book, I guess, in the same manner. I am thinking of how I can make it easy for other members of the family to follow it when I'm not around!!

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 2 Jan 2011 21:57

It depends on how large the family tree is. You can download charts from this site or Family Search I believe. Personally I would have so many sheets I would never find my way around them LOL. Our is one mighty big family with most having 12 or more kids, Nightmare or what !! If you only do your direct line you will have much less and you can buy proper charts like DET and I bought at the WDYTYA fair. I still have mine unused if you would like it. I will post it to you if you do. I bought it to put my Aunt's tree on for her as a present but poor old love died before I could do it.

YG

YG Report 2 Jan 2011 22:10

That is a very kind offer LG, but you may have use for it at some point. If you can tell me the make, perhaps I could buy one online.

I am only working on my maternal and paternal lines, including their siblings, mainly so that I can fulfil all the missing information on my ancestors in Australia. I'd hazard a guess at about 150 altogether, at the moment, unless I decide to expand once I retire!

Both my parents were only children, but my grandparents had siblings and I have never known much about them. There is no one left to ask that I can get in touch with. My brother has quite a lot of information but we haven't spoken for over 10 years now and don't think we ever will again. He is a stubborn so and so!
