John Shaw was born in 1879 in Middlesbrough but spent most of his life pre marriage to Ruth in Cradley Heath. John and Ruth married in 1909 in Solihull and they had a daughter, Lily born in 1908.

Looking at Census 1911, Ruth Shaw was a visitor in Holbeck,Yorkshire with an occupation of Manageress of a Bazaar! My query is where was John? (I know that Lily, the daughter was living with John's married sister, Harriet Rothan in Cradley Heath).

This is where I get confused! In Census 1911, a John Shaw born 1879 in North Ormesby, Middlesborough is apparently married to Ethel born 1885 and if correct married in 1907 in Stourbridge and they didn't have any children. John was employed as a Hotel Manager and they lived in Rowley Regis.

Can anyone help solve my query, or have I created a "Red Herring" for myself?

Getting copy marriage certs would be the sure way to get an answer.

Is this "your" John Shaw in 1901? A big leap to Hotel Manager in 1911, but not impossible.

Also, not impossible to "marry" twice.

The 2 marriage certificates would show Fathers details to see if they are the same and his signature could be checked against each other and also the 1911 census which would probably be signed by him.

I can't think that a cast iron moulder would morph into a hotel manager in the space of 10 years...........but, stranger things have happened........especially if the wife's family owned the hotel (that's conjecture)

Why would he marry in 1907.........leave his wife to 'marry' someone else in 1909, and return to the first edition by 1911?

You definitely need the certs as far I can see.........but you don't need three at this stage

I'm afraid not, however it is interesting to see that Ethel Billingham's father was an inn keeper in 1901!

i think you have the john shaw in Middlesbrough married to ruth wrong he had no middle name the john ernest shaw married ruth

Ruth Bushell is in numerous GR trees (but not yours, I see) so why not get in touch and see if the 'owners' can enlighten you

BTW, I've been unable to trace the daughter and her aunt in 1911...........please would you C&P the record for our info.

Which of the couple are you actually connected to?

How is John Shaw related to you and how have got back to him? Do you know if John had any siblings? You mention a daughter Lily did she have any siblings? Thanks
