Some of my forebears in the 19th century were Lightermen. My namesake once won the Doggett Coat and Badge, which is still rowed for annually on the Thames. Bob Waight.

4xgt.grandfather.

Peter Parker from Greenwich bound (apprenticed) to Charles Bowen 27/05/1763 - free 18/09/1777.

I have both of Peter's marriages, the births of his children and his will. He was also a pilot and was mentioned in the House of Commons.

There is a possible birth for him on LMA page 47 of 162 at St. Paul, Shadwell, 5/03/1747. His father was Richard, a lighterman, mother Mary.

If this is Peter he must have had a difficult childhood as his father was sentenced to be transport (to North America) for stealing elephants teeth (tusks).

Shadwell is very close to Greenwich about two miles or so across the Thames.

Will give you details of two more if you would like them.

Many thanks for the above information. I am hoping to find someone who has both seen the FMP records and also the True Flare records. If there is more info. on the True Flare records I will be more than happy to buy them. Many members of the family were Thames Watermen, including my father, grandfather and uncles on both sides of the family.

This will show information on the apprentice, date of binding, location served, masters full name and date of freedom (if granted).
This add-on service costs £5 and covers the period between 1692 and 1908. After a binding date has been established, it is possible
to search the affidavit birth proof books, available from 1759 to date, and should reveal the date and place of birth or baptism, or
sometimes both. This additional service costs £1.50 per individual plus 65p postage within the UK or £1.75 overseas.

On FMP one can view Thames Watermens records. Does anyone have the CDs, if so is there any more information on these than on the FMP transcriptions?
